Brandi Gisick

Brandi Gisick began working at Heartspring in October of 2010 as a paraeducator in Group Home Two. Within a year, she has been promoted to the Home Coordinator’s Assistant (HCA) position within the same group home. Brandi had extensive experience working in a regular preschool setting before coming to Heartspring.

The tasks and responsibilities that lay at our paraeducators’ feet are as herculean as the challenges our students are faced with every day of their lives. For many people, regardless of how long they may have worked with children in their previous careers, working specifically with children with developmental disabilities is a largely rewarding, and often times, formative experience. This seems to be the case for Brandi, as well.

“Working as a paraeducator has been life changing. I am a lot stronger than I ever thought I could be. These kids become a part of you, and teach you just as much as you are teaching them,” said Brandi. “There is so much responsibility that comes with being a para; you are their voice, you advocate for their needs and make sure they have everything they need to become more independent.”

Brandi quickly developed and honed her skills as a paraeducator. She became a peer mentor after a few months, and began training incoming staff on procedures and student plans. The peer mentor position is a leadership position and in this role, Brandi flourished. “I learned that I can take on more responsibility and ensure the new paras have the proper training and support they need to complete their daily duties. I also learned that I can help people to understand that it is more than just a job; it is a passion for creating a wonderful experience for these children,” said Brandi.

Her natural leadership abilities and deep knowledge of the students led her to jump at applying for an HCA position when it opened in Group Home Two. In October 2011, Brandi got the job. “The HCA position has been a huge eye opening experience, which I have loved every minute of. The new role is something I have had to adjust to,” said Brandi. “I am nervous for all the new things I am learning, I am excited to work closer with the parents, and I am sad that I don’t get as much one-on-one time with the students. I feel that I tackle all challenges head on, and although I don’t get to work with a child every day, I know that I am still responsible for making sure their daily goals and needs are met.”

Owing largely to a constant willingness to go above and beyond her due diligence on behalf of the students she serves, Brandi has done a great deal in a short span of time. “It gives me a sense of pride,” said Brandi, “knowing that I have only been at Heartspring for a year, and have been able to accomplish so many goals and aspirations. I can honestly say I love my job!”
