Micah

A letter reprinted with permission from Micah's parents 

It is very important to our family, Sandie and I that Micah participate in Special Olympics. It teaches him different sports, teamwork, and patience. It gives him self esteem and the chance to make and meet new friends.

We were able to watch Micah first hand at the Kansas Special Olympics State Games. We were in awe by the whole weekend. It was so special to watch Micah. You can't believe the pride you feel watching your child and seeing the smile on his face. Marching with Micah in the parade (Opening Ceremony) was so great. It was amazing the number of athletes, family members and volunteers.

Knowing that Heartspring supports APE (adapted physical education) and Special Olympics was a big part of choosing to enroll him here. Micah needs a well rounded physical education program to keep him healthy and happy. Micah was over weight when we got him to Heartspring and now has slimmed down. So now he feels better and looks great.

Travis (Heartspring’s APE teacher) has a wonderful way with the children. He knows how to work with the children to teach them the various sports. He works with each child's strengths. Travis and Sam (APE para) plan a variety of activities for the children to participate in - dances, movie night, horseback riding and other activities.

One weekend Heartspring had an outing to a ranch where the children were to go horseback riding. Micah walked right up to the staging area and got on the horse. He rode the horse 3 times. We were so proud of him. Micah was so afraid of animals when he was here in Hawaii.

Having the peace of mind knowing your child is safe, happy and healthy is priceless. Aloha and Mahalo.
